In recent months I have been compelled to go a little deeper in my own spiritual journey with the Holy Spirit. I am seeking not only for His Power and Presence to be manifested in my life… I am looking for His Personality to be seen in and through my life… in other words, I’m looking for the enduring evidence of the Spirit’s presence to be clearly seen in my everyday life.
Let’s face it, most of what we do on a day-to-day basis is very non-spiritual in nature. Not that it’s “un-spiritual” as if oppossed to the things of God. Simply non-spiritual, or devoid of the Spirit’s activity and leading. I mean, we can get up and go through our daily routines like eating breakfast, taking a shower, brushing our teeth, going through our mail, thinking about the day ahead, so on and so forth, and never really consider the Spirit’s presence with us. Quite simply, we are usually overwhelmed with the mundane or the basic routine of life.
But something deep within my heart craves an encounter with the Holy Spirit that is “real”, authentic, genuine, and attractive to outsiders. Instead of becoming overwhelmed with the stuff of life, I want to be more overwhelmed with an awareness of the Spirit’s presence not only with me, but in me!
The Psalmist, David penned the following:
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
Like David, I want to be so completely sensitive to the Spirit’s presence with me that I live every day with the knowledge that He is always right there with me, strengthening and encouraging me, equipping me for whatever He leads me to do, and especially… loving other people through me when I can’t find the will or the strength to do so myself.
“Holy Spirit come! Fill me. Empower me. Renew me. And yes, Overwhelm me with your Presence!”
